A consortium led by Vinci Construction has won a €970m design-and-build contract for the €2.7bn City Rail Link Project in Auckland, New Zealand.

The Link Alliance team also includes Soletanche Bachy International of France, Australia’s Downer Group, WSP Opus, Tonkin + Taylor of New Zealand and US engineer Aecom. It was named preferred bidder for the scheme, but no contract had been signed.

The consortium has now been officially awarded Package 3 of the scheme. This involves building two 3.5km-long, twin rail tunnels up to 42m below the city centre, connecting Britomart station to the western line at Eden Terrace. Along that line, three new stations will be built, two of which will be underground.

The City Rail Link will be able to carry 54,000 passengers an hour, and is expected to double the number of people who can reach downtown Auckland in under 30 minutes.
